getting it done when you're tired (2/7/22)

Today was abit of a whirlwind, but also shows the difference of where I am now compared to a while ago.

I woke up this morning (4am) for my usual Saturday morning swim but I never, ever sleep well on Friday nights. I was in bed at 10:20, but finally fell asleep gone 11:30.

When I’m tired, I feel weak and ropey the next day, but I’m getting better at handling that feeling and I actually get quite excited to swim hard sessions on days like this still. It’s changed through work with my sport psychologist, and it came from one simple saying.

‘You don’t need to feel good all the time to get it done’

Simple, yes. But it speaks to a mindset that we’ve adopted together, as when I first went to her I felt that everything needed to be *perfect* whenever I trained, raced etc.

In reality, no, it is never a perfect situation. And it is very rarely all smooth sailing. There have been days where I’ve felt literally awful and still pulled a good swim out of myself, but there have also been days where I’ve felt good and the opposite has happened.

The important thing for me to acknowledge is when it is too much, is when I need a rest. But, as long as it isn’t that scenario, how much can I get out of myself even when I’m not 100%, is a far more rewarding and positive mentality than getting down about not feeling 100%.

The rest of the day was spent with a mentoring session, sleeping, squad breakfast 😎 and playing poker with a couple of the lads, it’s been great fun.

Now abs is home so tomorrow is a big day of chilling, F1 and stranger things 😁

It's been a while, and I am not making these 'public' in the sense of advertising them on social media for now, if you make your own way...
